23RD GROUND CONTROL SEMINAR ORGANIZED BY THE QUÉBEC MINING ASSOCIATION
Québec City, April 12, 2016 – After a seven-year gap, the Québec Mining Association (QMA) is pleased to announce the return of its ground control seminar. The event offers participants from the mining industry an opportunity to discuss best practices in the area of ground control, rock mechanics and ground support, and to gather information.
"Ground control is the starting point for all mine development. The QMA, maintaining its constant focus on providing a safe workplace for employees, wants to use this seminar to promote best practices in the industry and discuss issues and the future of ground control in Québec's mines," says Josée Méthot, the QMA's president and CEO.
The 23rd ground control seminar will bring together around one hundred participants, from project leaders to mine superintendents, for ten presentations given by engineers working for mining companies in Québec. The topics covered will include the design of ground support, geological and technical details, the impact of corrosion, seismic risk management, and other matters.
The QMA has invited Yves Potvin as a guest speaker. He is a mining industry pioneer known in particular for the Matthews/Potvin stability formulas used to assess safe, stable operating conditions for working places in underground mines, and will discuss a new approach to the design of ground control.
"The QMA, always aware of its members' concerns, saw the need to bring back the ground control seminar as a way of allowing information to circulate about best practices, whether applied now or in the future. Workplace health and safety remains a priority and we want to offer our member companies the tools they need, beginning with the tools relating to the mine structure itself," says Ms. Méthot.
