F.J. O’CONNELL TROPHIES

Each year since 1966, the Québec Mining Association (QMA) has awarded F.J. O’Connell trophies to honour the workplace health and safety (WHS) results of QMA members and highlight the prevention activities they implement.

The selection criteria take into account the :

  • OSHA incident rate;
  • the severity rate;
  • the completion of a diagnostic audit of their workplace health and safety management in the reference year or in the two previous years;
  • the presence of an in-house trainer accredited for the Supervisory Formula-Work Card (SFWC) program;
  • the provision of SFWC training each year;
  • the completion of two SFWC audits per supervisor.

Three F.J. O’Connell trophies are presented each year in the following categories:

  • Underground operations, under 400,000 hours worked;
  • Underground operations, over 400,000 hours worked;
  • Surface operations, transportation and primary metals processing.

The QMA congratulates the winners for 2022:

Underground operations, over 400,000 hours worked (ex aequo):

  • Goldex Mine, Mines Agnico Eagle Ltd
  • Raglan Mine, a Glencore company

Surface operations, transportation and primary metals processing:

  • Horne Smelter, a Glencore company
  • Bird Civil et Mines

QMA DISTINCTION AWARDS

In 2021, for the first time in its history, the QMA presented its new awards to recognize innovative, distinctive or creative achievements in the following areas of activity: communications/marketing, environment, community relations and human resources.

The QMA congratulates the award winners for 2022:

  • Communications/marketing: Horne Smelter, a Glencore company for its communication strategy surrounding the “VELOX” project;
  • Environment: Kiena mining complex, Wesdome, which stood out for the choice of techniques used to reinforce the soil at the foot of their tailings facility;
  • Community relations: Wasamac mining project, Yamana Gold for its approach to developing and implementing mitigation measures to significantly reduce the impacts of activities on the sound environment;
  • Human resources: LaRonde mining complex, Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. for its technological shift in using virtual reality as a learning tool.

WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY AWARDS

Each year the QMA also recognizes the workplace health and safety achievements of foremen and supervisors in the mining industry. They receive workplace health and safety trophies to commend their achievements and the effort made by their teams to maintain a safe working environment for periods of between 50,000 and 600,000 hours.
